Provides students with a basic understanding of how the parliament of the United Kingdom works. The units cover rules and laws in society, the UK voting process, how bills go through parliament, political parties and Members of Parliament. The focus is to relate political concepts and issues to the students' personal lives thereby extending their understanding of similar issues in the wider world. Students learn that responsible citizenship plays out in the home, at school, and in the wider community.

Four units include: • Why Rules? Students explore the purpose of rules in school and societies, and the strengths and limitations of different societies. The final activity encourages students to decide upon their ideal community. • Why Vote? Students learn about the voting process and the different types of elections. They explore the different structures, roles and responsibilities of government and parliament. • How Are Laws Made? Students learn about the three branches of government by investigating how a proposed bill becomes law. • How Do I Get Involved? Students consider a school issue to discover that they can influence decisions in their local community by speaking out. This will help them to practise their rights as responsible citizens.
